Photos from GCN Licencing & Mitigation Demonstration

A selection of photos from the newt fencing demonstration that we performed at the Great Crested Newt Licencing and Mitigation Course from November 2012.
See previous blog entry
This course runs in Autumn every year and is lead by Jim Fairclough of Golder Associates in association with Amphibian & Reptile Conservation (ARC-Trust).

and how this can provide maximum
great crested newt protection.

The ACO range of amphibian protection products generates
lots of discussion.

Another successful event and a great opportunity to meet some new ecology recruits and hear their comments about newt fencing installation and GCN mitigation. Lots of useful comments which can help us to develop our Caudon range of products. Also some very interesting discussions about ACO products and how these might help to develop great crested newt mitigation installations in the future.

Temporary Newt Fencing Repair Tape

I still see a lot of duct tape out on sites, used to repair temporary newt fencing with, and see it flapping around in the wind, not doing the job for which it was intended, leaving gaping holes in a newt fence.

Duct tape, or gaffer tape (apparently they are different) are no good for the purpose of mending holes, tears, or to make joins in polythene newt fencing. They are both great tapes for other purposes but are not UV resistant, or waterproof and don't stand up to the British weather for long periods of time. The adhesive on duct tape very quickly dries out when exposed to the elements and very quickly fails to retains it adhesion to the plastic newt fencing membrane.

Caudon Waterproof UV Repair Tape does exactly what it says on the tin, its waterproof, UV stabilised.... and it sticks. It can even be used when the newt fencing polythene membrane is wet. We didn't believe this at first but it does work and now always carry some when on temporary newt fencing contracts. Its tough stuff and retains it adhesion to the newt fencing membrane when exposed to the British climate and should continue to do so for up to 2 years.

If you're an ecologist, or site manager and have the responsibility of looking after a temporary newt fence and maintaining its integrity, get yourself a roll of Caudon Waterproof UV Repair Tape.

We're on a roll!

At wildlifefencing, we are continually developing our products to improve product performance and reduce product prices where possible.

Our Caudon Semi-permanent Newt Fencing panels have proved to be a popular product over the last few years as these provide an extremely robust mitigation fence compared to Temporary (polythene) Newt Fencing but without incurring the expense of most permanent newt fencing systems.

To improve this product further, we are now able to offer this material in a continuous length, for up to 200m (approximately).

This massively improves its strength as it eliminates the need for any joins over this length, a common weak point in most panel type newt fencing systems.

We believe that this product, if installed correctly could easily go head-to-head with any permanent newt fencing system for strength and durability but at a fraction of the cost.

Our Caudon Semi-permanent Newt Fencing 'On-a-Roll' works out at about 25-30% of the cost of permanent newt fencing, depending on the quantity purchased.

The material is identical to that used in the semi-permanent panels and comprises of a 1mm thick UV-stabilised polypropylene at 850mm wide. As with the panels, there is a scored groove at the top to allow the installer to create a 50mm top return, and one at 100mm from the bottom so that an underground return can be made, if required.

Caudon Newt Fencing Sledge

The recent snowy weather has not only brought on some hazardous road conditions and general travel chaos, but has also generated the usual rush to the shops for bread, milk and other essential items like... sledges.

This has led to the recent discovery that our Caudon 4mm HDPE Permanent Newt Fencing makes a most excellent sledge.

Cut into 600mm wide sections, meaning you can get 4 sledges out of one panel, the extremely hard wearing and smooth HDPE material glides perfectly across fresh snow, compacted snow and ice. The top fold provides a great handle to hold up the front of the sledge and used in a 'lying on your front' style, it can easily be steered with the feet.

Easily the fastest sledge I have been on this year. Buy your Caudon Sledge at http://www.wildlifefencing.co.uk

The Caudon® Clip has arrived

This product has been designed specifically for use with our Caudon® Semi-permanent Newt Fencing. Unlike our Permanent Newt Fencing which has the all important top fold permantently welded into the panels, our 1mm thick Semi-permanent newt fencing panels are manufactured as a flat panel with a scored groove along the top of the board to allow the installer to create a top fold with ease themselves.

The Caudon® Semi-permanent Newt Fencing system provides a robust, flexible and economical newt fencing solution.

The Caudon® Clip has been developed as a very simple, easy to install fitting to hold this top fold in position. Simply slide the clip onto the top fold portion of the newt fencing panel, fold down and screw the clip and the panel to the wooden supporting post in one process. This creates a very neat and durable top fold and eliminates those annoying gaps in the top fold where panels are joined.

The Caudon® Clip is available exclusively from www.wildlifefencing.co.uk.
